I have some Problems to get that running…
First, I have configured the Software part:
<Software>
<Application Id="00000001" Label="Citrix Receiver (FM)" Name="Citrix Receiver Enterprise"/>
<Application Id="00000002" Label="Adobe Acrobat PRO" Name="Adobe Acrobat 2017"/>
<Application Id="00000003" Label="DIALux" Name="DIALux evo"/>
<Application Id="00000004" Label="FileZilla Client" Name="FileZilla Client"/>
<Application Id="00000005" Label="FormsForWeb Filler" Name="FormsForWeb Filler"/> </Software>
then the AppTree part:
<Action Type="AppTree" Size="Regular" Title="Choose Software">
<SoftwareSets>
<Set Name="IT">
<SoftwareGroup Id="Group1" Label="Default" Required="True">
<SoftwareRef Id="00000001" />
<SoftwareRef Id="00000002" />
<SoftwareRef Id="00000003" />
</SoftwareGroup>
<SoftwareGroup Id="Group2" Label="Additional">
<SoftwareRef Id="00000004" /> <SoftwareRef Id="00000005" /> </SoftwareGroup> </Set> </SoftwareSets>
So far, so good… My expectation was that within the Tasksequence I can install the choosen Software using the %XApplications% variable... but that does not work. Do I have to add the TSVarList Action Type? Or am I missing something else?

Please define "does not work"? What does smsts.log say for your Install Applications task in the task sequence?

I have the same issue. When I open the variable editor I see the Xapplications01, Xapplications02,... getting populated. In the smsts.log I see the following errors:
No Env variable with specified basename XApplications01 and suffix '01' is found. No applications installed. InstallApplication 22/05/2019 13:26:29 4860 (0x12FC)
Failed to run the action: Install selected UI++ applications. Unknown error (Error: 80004005; Source: Unknown) TSManager 22/05/2019 13:26:29 5100 (0x13EC)
The execution engine ignored the failure of the action (Install selected UI++ applications) and continues execution TSManager 22/05/2019 13:26:29 5100 (0x13EC)

I found the solution, in my case it was the following: I had to select the following checkbox in the application general information:
Allow this application to be installed from install application task sequence action without being deployed.
After I enabled this, the applications installed.
